BONAIRE, Netherlands Antilles In my dreams, they return to me. Brash
violet and neon yellow. Zebra stripes and polka dots. The only
sound is my breath, slow and deep, as I float weightless through
clear, endless shades of blue.
When I awake, a feeling of tranquillity stays with me, altered only
by my anxiousness to return to the warmth of the Caribbean Sea.
Learning to scuba dive long had been a distant, uncertain wish.
I've pored over books on marine life - just for fun. "Discovery" and
"Nova" held unusual fascination. I've lost myself for hours
wandering through countless aquariums.
At the very heart of the problem, though, is this: I'm a chicken.
