When Lesley Stahl started lip-syncing to Ethel Merman, I knew it
was time to start calling friends around the country to urge them to
tune in C-SPAN.
"What are you talking about?" said one friend who knew I was on
a remote control bender while nursing a cold. "You must have
overdosed on Sudafed."
It was no over-the-counter delusion. The august "60 Minutes"
star was being roasted at a benefit at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill
in Washington, D.C., and C-SPAN was televising it live - thus giving
cable viewers a chance to witness an utter train wreck of an evening,
with more failed one-liners than a Chevy Chase film festival.
The lip-syncing episode occurred during the showing of "Stahl of ...
