The rise of the early music movement has caused a division between champions of baroque performance practices and defenders of traditional classical music, a rift so great that you might think partisans were speaking two different languages.

But the infiltration of the early music crowd into conservatories has meant an increasing cross-fertilization of styles even within such a grand romantic band as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Sunday afternoon at the Fullerton Auditorium of the Art Institute of Chicago, four "bilingual" CSO players offered music of French, English, Dutch and German baroque composers on original instruments or copies.
