Who cares if he's not quite a saint in the eyes of the church?

When Edmund Rice was beatified by the Catholic Church last week, he was a saint to the 1,400 teenagers at his namesake school at 10001 S. Pulaski.

They got the day off. Not students Dan Lazarz and Kevin Carter, though. They were in Rome for the beatification ceremony at St. Peter's Square, joining 50,000 other Roman Catholics. "When I heard his name called out - Brother Rice - it made me proud to be part of Brother Rice High School," said Lazarz, 17, of Alsip.
