In 1986, if someone had told us the New England Patriots would be
back in the Super Bowl before the Bears, we might have asked what
kind of hallucinogen produces such a trip.
The Patriots, then and now, appeared to be a team that was lucky
to have reached the Super Bowl. They didn't even win the AFC East in
1985 and had to win three games as a wild card on the road to earn
the right to face the Bears.
The Bears, who won Super Bowl XX by a 46-10 score, seemed to be
a budding dynasty. They were one of the league's youngest teams and
had a defense for which there was no answer.
