Steve Rucchin's goal with 1:19 left in overtime gave the Anaheim
Mighty Ducks a 1-0 victory Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings and
the first triumph in their history at Joe Louis Arena.
Rucchin's goal ended a sparkling duel between the Red Wings'
Mike Vernon, who turned away all but the last of the 31 shots he
faced, and the Mighty Ducks' Mikhail Shtalenkov, who turned away all
26 he faced.
Vernon, who was making his fourth consecutive start for the Red
Wings, blocked Paul Kariya's low shot from between the circles and
skated out of the crease to cut down the angle on the rebound. But
Rucchin got the puck on the left side and ripped a slap shot past
Vernon and into the upper right ...
