Off and on for the past 30 years, Bill Buckley and I have pursued a
friendly argument over the primary function of a writer. My chief
concern is with communication. His chief concern is with style.
William F. Buckley Jr. will always be Numero Uno to me. Over
the years he has served as founder and editor of National Review. He
has written 20 books, turned out thousands of newspaper columns and
delivered heaven knows how many lectures. His "Firing Line" draws
top-drawer viewers. He is a warm and engaging human being, and he
passionately loves the English language. But now and then we do
break a lance or two.
The aim of successful communication, it seems to me, is to reach
the audience one ...
