SAN JOSE, Calif. The bullets zipped past Marine Cpl. Thomas Lowery as he hauled food and supplies for U.S. military efforts in Somalia, just close enough to let him know he was on hostile ground.

Had it not been for his wife and daughter, the gunfire might have had little impact on Lowery, a seasoned soldier. Instead, it became a reason to start over.

Today, the former sergeant is a 27-year-old sophomore at San Jose State, struggling to earn a starting role on the basketball team.
