Article: N. Michigan work starts smoothly // City still pushes alternate routes

City transportation officials were pleased but cautious Monday, after serious traffic snarls failed to materialize around the Michigan Avenue site of a $16 million reconstruction project.

"This morning looked better than we thought it could," said Stan Kaderbek, chief of the city Bureau of Bridges. "Traffic was moderate.

"But we don't want people to think it's OK to return to Michigan Avenue. They should continue to use alternate routes" and public transportation for the duration of the project, he said.
