NASHVILLE, Tenn. The minimalist gifts of Dan Penn have taken a
generation of music fans to many different places.
In 1966, Penn and Spooner Oldham wrote the tender James and
Bobby Purify hit "I'm Your Puppet." Wilson Pickett had a hit with
Penn's "You Left the Water Running." And Penn's "Dark End of the
Street" was the centerpiece of the film "The Commitments."
Amazingly, Chicago is one place Penn has never been.
Penn, 55, makes his area debut at the Chicago Blues Festival on
Saturday. He'll appear with keyboardist Oldham at 3:15 p.m. Saturday
on the Front Porch Stage, and return as a solo act at 7:50 p.m. in ...
