So Billy Graham prayed with lots of presidents. I knew that.
So he studied at Wheaton College and preached in Western
Springs. I knew that, too.
But those are only the bookends to Graham's compelling
autobiography Just as I Am (HarperCollins) published last week. In
between is the story of the man many call "America's preacher," an
often bold, sometimes brash evangelist who acted publicly with trust
in God and sometimes wondered privately if it would work out.
That is the pervasive sense of honesty flowing through this
lengthy book (700-plus pages) that chronicles Graham's journey from
backwoods North Carolina, through the Chicago suburbs and to the ends
of the earth.
