SAN DIEGO Why are managers fired?
Because they can't get mediocre teams to play great or great
teams to play well. Because their underachieving teams don't put
enough fans in the seats.
Because general managers and owners shift the blame from
themselves. Because there always is a surplus of genuises waiting in
the wings.
Because players complain they aren't being used properly.
Because change is fun and exciting, as proved by the country's
divorce rate.
So when you are the crossing guard for the worst accident in
