What a long, strange trip it has been for Mike Vernon.
Left for dead as the Red Wings goalie on more than one occasion,
Vernon is grateful he will be in net for Detroit on Saturday (7
p.m., Fox-32) when the Red Wings take the ice in Philadelphia for
Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals.
Vernon, 34, has been in this position before. Though he won a
Cup in Calgary, Vernon became the scapegoat when the Red Wings were
swept out of the NHL championship series by New Jersey two years ago.
That was followed by nasty negotiations with the front office,
which ended in a contract dispute that went to arbitration.
And this season, he gave way to Chris Osgood.
