Circuit Court Clerk Aurelia M. Pucinski, a 1994 loser to John H.
Stroger in the Democratic primary for Cook County Board president, is
looking for a rematch.
Pucinski, 50, is discussing a 1998 challenge to Stroger in the
Democratic primary. Stroger's camp views her as a serious threat.
A sitting Cook County Board president never has been defeated
for renomination in a Democratic primary. But Pucinski is
well-positioned to break this tradition.
Pucinski regards Stroger as a tax-and-spend, old-style
politician. She recently noted that the Cook County Board has
"demonstrated time and time again" that it can't control the cost of
government. The county has a budget of $2.2 billion.
