The custom of toasting dates back to biblical times, but the
first recorded toast took place in England in 450 A.D. at a feast
hosted by British King Vortigern for his Saxon allies.
The term "toasting" was not used until the late 17th century.
It began from the custom of placing a crouton in the wine goblet,
which attendees passed and shared. Toasting was born when the last
person who sipped from the glass claimed the toast at the bottom.
During the 17th century, people began clinking glasses after
delivering a toast. It was believed that by recognizing all five
senses during the toast - taste, touch, sight, smell and sound - the
drink was made more enjoyable.
