The custom of toasting dates back to biblical times, but the first recorded toast took place in England in 450 A.D. at a feast hosted by British King Vortigern for his Saxon allies.

The term "toasting" was not used until the late 17th century. It began from the custom of placing a crouton in the wine goblet, which attendees passed and shared. Toasting was born when the last person who sipped from the glass claimed the toast at the bottom.
