The NFL is reviewing a hit by Denver Broncos linebacker Bill
Romanowski that broke Carolina Panthers quarterback Kerry Collins'
jaw and will sideline him for an estimated six weeks.
It likely will take several days for the NFL to determine
whether the hit, which took place during an exhibition game Saturday,
was illegal and warrants a fine, league spokesman Greg Aiello said
Monday.
Aiello said the league did not wait for a request from the
Panthers to look into the matter. He said the NFL initiated the
review on its own after seeing replays of the hit.
"It's a matter of routine," Aiello said. "Any plays involving
helmet-to-helmet hits on quarterbacks in the pocket, those types of
