NEW YORK Finally taking that well-earned vacation, you're standing at the car rental counter with spouse and kids in tow. The clerk asks if you want to buy a collision damage waiver, which covers theft or damage to the rental car.

The savvy traveler's decision used to be fairly straightforward: If you already had car insurance, you probably were covered under your policy and didn't need the waiver. Ditto if you paid for the rental with a credit card.
