Three of the first eight shots Washington Capitals goaltender Olaf
Kolzig faced in the playoffs last spring found their way into the
net. Kolzig surrendered six goals through the first two periods of
the first-round series with the Pittsburgh Penguins, a drubbing from
which he never quite recovered.
Kolzig, whose superior play in 1998 led Washington to its only
Stanley Cup finals appearance, entered this postseason with perhaps
as much to prove as any player. His uncharacteristic performance
against Pittsburgh last year tarnished an outstanding regular season
that earned him the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie.
Kolzig, 31, was not as brilliant or consistent in this regular
season, but ...
