Michelle Pfeiffer offers a mint and panic swells. Great, you think,
your breath is grossing out one of the most beautiful women in the
world.
But she pops one between her own perfect lips before your
composure is lost. "I had a Caesar salad for lunch," she blurts out,
then laughs. "I'm sparing you."
Pfeiffer has a knack for gestures like this, the little
expressions of frailty that emphasize the humanity beneath the
exquisite shell. It's probably what's made her a world-class movie
star, too. Most women who break into the business on their looks -
