The future of Michael Reese Hospital is in question as
Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. gets ready to cut loose the
125-year-old Chicago institution and more than 100 other hospitals
around the United States.
Management of Michael Reese says the hospital, 2929 S. Ellis, is
in no danger of closing and is doing better financially now than in
the past.
But unlike some of Columbia/HCA's seven other area hospitals,
Michael Reese's long-term future is by no means guaranteed.
"As far as an acute care hospital, nobody has any interest in
it," said Clark Bell, editor of Chicago-based Modern Health Care.
Bell said that in contrast, Columbia/HCA's La Grange Memorial
Hospital would sell quickly.
