Ending the shortest campaign in memory, Republican Gayle M.
Franzen pulled the plug Wednesday on his weeklong bid for secretary
of state and apologized for being "dishonest" in seeking an office he
did not really want.
"Very, very bluntly, my biggest fear was that I'd win," Franzen
said. "I thought I would win, and that frightened me because in my
heart and soul I didn't want to be governor. I didn't want to be
secretary of state."
The secretary of state's office dispenses driver's licenses and
vehicle tags, but is often considered a stepping-stone to the
governor's mansion.
