WASHINGTON Freshman Rep. Walter Capps (D-Calif.) died Tuesday
afternoon after being stricken by an apparent heart attack at Dulles
International Airport, colleagues said.
Rep. Capps, 63, of Santa Barbara, Calif., was traveling back to
Washington as the House prepared to vote on a defense authorization
bill Tuesday afternoon. Word spread quickly among his colleagues and
two, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that he had died.
He was taken to Columbia Reston Hospital. Rep. Capps was
accompanied by his wife, Lois Grimsrud.
President Clinton expressed sadness upon learning of Rep.
Capps' death.
