One can only imagine the excitement generated by the
revolutionary new 1949 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe de Ville in a country
absolutely starved for new cars after World War II.
The Coupe de Ville was Cadillac's first sporty "hardtop
convertible." And it was the first Caddy to get the automaker's
revolutionary new high-compression, overhead-valve V-8.
The public was clamoring for any type of new car in 1949, and
convertibles were especially desirable - although cars with metal
tops were far stronger and more rigid at that time.
The Coupe de Ville was the first series-produced hardtop in the
