CHESTERTON, Ind. The cold steel exterior of the historic Lustron home contrasts with the warm soul of singer-songwriter Leonardo Biciunas. A few years ago the former Chicagoan relocated to northwest Indiana, where he discovered a sleek Lustron wedged in between Chesterton's old bungalows.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Lustron Corp. Lustron built streamlined, prefabricated steel houses in a surplus wartime aircraft factory in Columbus, Ohio. The enameled steel houses never needed painting and could be washed down with a garden hose. About 2,500 Lustrons were built before the company went out of business in 1950.
