LOS ANGELES The third kind of "Close Encounters" will come to
video in May.
The 1977 "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," which director
Steven Spielberg amended, altered and re-released in 1980 as "Close
Encounters of the Third Kind: Special Edition," will now become
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Collector's Edition."
The latest edition removes the climactic scene in which Richard
Dreyfuss' character goes inside the alien mothership. That was the
scene that Spielberg reportedly reluctantly agreed to add as a
condition of a theatrical re-release of the film just three years
after its original premiere.
