Researchers have found the first human gene associated with hair
loss.
"The discovery of this new gene gives us endless possibilities
that may allow us to effectively treat hair loss and possibly
baldness within the next five years," said Angela Christiano,
professor of dermatology at Columbia-University College of Physicians
and Surgeons in New York, and senior investigator on the project.
The scientists approached their search two ways - tracing a gene
in a line of hairless mice that have been used in research for
decades, and by studying genetic information from a family in a
village in Pakistan whose members suffer from a rare form of total
balding called alopecia universalis.
