A surprising number of weekend athletes injure their jaws or
teeth while playing sports.
Dennis N. Ranalli, chairman of the department of pediatric
dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine,
recommends that athletes wear mouth guards to prevent injury. He
offers this advice on the three basic types:
