A baby boomlet is about to hit New Trier High School in Winnetka,
stirring debate on the North Shore over the best way to expand.
New Trier is bracing for a projected 37 percent surge in
students. Enrollment is expected to peak at 4,200 by 2008, up from
3,075 now.
School officials hope to take action by 2000.
The most divisive issue is where to draw a boundary if the
school board reopens the New Trier West campus, about 2 1/2 miles
west of the Winnetka campus in Northfield. The West campus closed in
1985 because of declining enrollment.
The district includes Glencoe, Winnetka, Kenilworth, Wilmette
and parts of Northfield, Glenview and Northbrook.
