Article: Neighbors think rats stream from old building

For decades independent packing houses just east of the old stockyards fed the local economy by slaughtering hogs and cattle before shipping the meat to distributors.

Many of the packing houses are gone, but the stalled demolition of one in the 4100 block of South Union has made it a nuisance to Canaryville residents.

Thomas Millard, who lives in the 4200 block of South Lowe, said the painfully slow demolition of the building is driving displaced rats into streets, alleys and backyards. "I sit on my back porch and see them in and out of the garage," Millard said. "They're just running rampant."
