The uniforms may read "Padres," but Jim Riggleman couldn't attest
to these players being the real thing, even though he was the manager
in San Diego as recently as 1994.
If it weren't for Tony Gwynn, Riggleman might mistake these
Padres for an expansion team.
Of course, Gwynn has been around forever, or so it seems to Cubs
fans. Remember the National League playoffs of 1984?
It's the same Gwynn now, good as ever, but with a new
surrounding cast. Again.
Turnover has been so large that only five Padres remain from
Riggleman's last team that won just 47 of 117 games before the
strike mercifully ended the season.
Go back another year to 1993, and only three players remain -
Gwynn, starter ...
