Seventy-eight-year-old Sigmund "Ziggy" Biernat sat on his white
5-gallon fishing bucket. Seven-year-old Jennifer Sanchez waited on
top of a cooler. Watched by his mother, Denise Vician, 7-month-old
Marty lay in a baby carriage in the shade. He was awake, keeping a
sharp eye on things.
It was an ageless ritual for Chicagoans of all ages:
Catching yellow perch along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
The sun was barely up Wednesday, and Montrose Harbor was
already buzzing with hundreds of anglers. Somebody had ordered up a
perfect day for the reopening of yellow perch season on Lake Michigan
in Illinois.
