Calcium supplements can help soothe the symptoms of premenstrual
syndrome, according to a new study by Columbia University
researchers.
Women who took 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day reduced PMS
symptoms by more than 50 percent, according to the study of more than
500 women, which is to be published this week in the American Journal
of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Peter Schmidt, head of the behavioral endocrinology branch at
the National Institute of Mental Health, said the findings add to
scientific studies that link calcium deficiency with PMS symptoms.
PMS afflicts as many as 40 percent of women of childbearing age.
