Two years ago, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles commissioned Luis Alfaro to write a play about the immigrant experience. What they got was "Straight as a Line," a two-character, 67-minute drama about AIDS, with all the attendant cliches that have come to snake around such plays like intravenous tubing.

The Taper should have asked for its money back, and not because Alfaro strayed from his topic.

But as life would have it, "Straight as a Line" was produced. It has even won competitions. And now it has found its way to the Goodman Studio Theatre.
