Nobody gave him a chance.
But a half-century ago, Harry Truman beat the odds and defeated
the overconfident Republican Thomas Dewey to win the presidency in
his own right.
In many ways, Democratic gubernatorial nominee Glenn Poshard is
a throwback to the Truman era. When Poshard launched his campaign,
he described himself as a Truman Democrat. Like Truman, Poshard is a
plain-spoken, fighting underdog.
Like Truman, Poshard has struggled to overcome the perception
that he can't win. Republican gubernatorial nominee George H. Ryan
has led Poshard in the polls by an even greater margin than Dewey led
