Forty-year-old third basemen usually don't have strong job
security, especially as a starter. But manager Jim Riggleman said
Sunday that Gary Gaetti will be his starting third baseman next year,
and Jose Hernandez is likely to start out as his shortstop.
"I'm not worried about his age," Riggleman said of Gaetti. "He
seems more like 30 than 40 to me. He played outstanding third base
for us, and if we can come to terms with him, he'll be our third
baseman."
In assessing the future, Riggleman said the Cubs still might
shower Terry Mulholland with enough money to convince him to return;
Orlando Merced is an outfielder and pinch hitter the team wants to
re-sign; reliever Terry Adams has ...
