BOSTON Suddenly, Denis Leary and Ted Demme don't just sound like old friends and creative partners, they sound like bombardiers reliving a mission.

The object of their payload is singer Fiona Apple. Leary's recent comedy CD and Demme-directed HBO special, both called "Denis Leary: Lock 'n' Load," featured Janeane Garofalo parodying Fiona's preachy acceptance speech at the MTV Awards.

Demme, here to join Leary in presenting their drama "Monument Ave." at the Boston Film Festival, tells Leary about crossing paths with Apple at an L.A. restaurant.
