Article: A Pucinski run for mayor could be costly mistake

It's the wrong race at the wrong time.

That's the reaction of top Republicans to Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Aurelia M. Pucinski's prospective 1999 candidacy for mayor of Chicago. She has been advised that it would be folly to challenge Mayor Daley in the wake of her crushing loss for the Cook County Board presidency.

Pucinski, 51, has told allies that she will decide later this week whether to proceed with a campaign. She has collected more than 35,000 signatures on her nominating petitions (25,000 are required to make the ballot) for what will be the city's first nonpartisan mayoral election. Allies of Rep.
