Harry Zemel loved baseball.

He was known for the sports statistics he could cite in an instant and for playing 16-inch softball at Hollywood Park. But his greatest pleasure came from watching his grandson, Jacob Solomon Briskman, pitch for Northwestern University.

And despite a long devotion to the Chicago White Sox, Mr. Zemel sometimes gave equal time to the Cubs when he visited Wrigleyville to check on real estate he owned there. Mr. Zemel, a Northfield resident, died Monday in the hospice unit of Evanston Hospital after battling cancer. He was 78. He came to Chicago from Poland with his family at age 3.
