Almost 40 motorists received compensation for damage to their
cars in the first 25 days of Illinois' new, tougher smog test and a
score more have complained about damages from the treadmill test.
They are among 120,000 drivers whose cars were tested by Feb.
25, nearly two months after the new testing began.
Not everybody has gotten satisfaction from Envirotest, the
company that runs the testing stations for the Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency.
The transmission on Tony Sacco's 1985 Chevy S10 Blazer started
slipping after the car was run on the treadmill test Feb. 6.
After paying $800 to get the transmission fixed, Sacco had his
claim turned down by Envirotest.
