Chicago Heights officials tried but failed to prevent 38 families
evacuated from CHA housing because of heat problems from moving into
the south suburb's Hacienda Inn on Friday, according to Chicago
Housing Authority residents and officials, as well as the hotel
manager.
Four Chicago Heights police officers and a half-dozen officials
were waiting when the first busload of CHA tenants arrived about 2
p.m. Friday, a CHA police officer said.
"The bus pulled up, and it was chaos. They were bum-rushing us
with questions, and we didn't know anything. We thought it was a
welcome wagon, but when we got off the bus, we ran back on," CHA
resident Vanessa Miller said.
