In her new book, Lemon Magic: 200 Beauty and Household Uses for Lemon Juice (Three Rivers Press, $10), Patty Moosbrugger gives the phrase "lemon aid" new meaning. Some of her tips: In the kitchen: Rub a teaspoon of lemon juice on berry- or fruit-stained hands to clean them.

Put half a lemon in the water when cooking cabbage to eliminate odor. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice per quart of water to make fluffier rice and prevent it from sticking. In the laundry: Cover an ink stain with cream of tartar, then drizzle a few drops of lemon juice over the stain, rub in and remove the powder with brush, then sponge with warm water.
