The paper road map may become just another artifact of the waning 20th century - replaced by onboard vehicle navigation systems.

But it will take some time before the sophisticated systems installed by automakers mainly in upscale vehicles become available to most motorists.

Prices range all over the place like a driver lost on country back roads. A good navigation system generally carries a price tag of around $2,000. But if purchased as a factory-installed option that's part of a bigger package of electronic features, the system can add $5,000 to the sticker price.
