When Bob Ritchie would DJ at hip-hop parties in the Mt. Clemens housing project outside Detroit back in the early 1980s, the all- black crowd would sometimes yell, "Watch that white kid rock!" That was pretty fly for that white guy, now known simply as Kid Rock.

Kid Rock, 27, grew up in the very un-hip-hop town of Romeo, Mich., a predominantly white Detroit suburb. He listened mostly to rock and country records, but that all changed when he heard rap pioneers such as Whodini and Run DMC. He got a set of turntables at age 13, and soon was sneaking out of the house to DJ at hip-hop parties ...
