Warren Leight avoided writing about his parents for two decades.
"This was probably for the best," he confesses in the introduction
to the published version of "Side Man," his 1999 Tony Award-winning
play. "Because during my years as a writer-for-hire, I gained a
little perspective and shed a little anger."
Leight's bittersweet, quasi-autobiographical play, which has
enjoyed a long run on Broadway and will open this weekend at the
Steppenwolf Theatre (previews are now in progress), is a disturbing
yet frequently funny memoir of his parents' troubled marriage and of
his own role as surrogate ...
