Mary Chapin Carpenter stands out in mainstream country music like
a Harley-Davidson parked in a Volkswagen showroom.
Consider: She's had many chart successes, but her lyrics aren't
sappy or cliched. Though she's pretty and blond, she refuses to be
"packaged" as a big-haired Nash-Vegas chick. No diva, she's a
literate maverick, a Brown University grad who writes most of her own
material.
Carpenter, who will perform Wednesday night at Ravinia, forges her
own path in an industry that often discourages an artist's
creativity.
