Article: How to stay cool on a hot bus

Here's a hot weather tip for catching a cool ride on Chicago Transit Authority buses this summer: Look for, and wait for, a bus with a four-digit model number starting with 53, 58, 60 or 71.

Those are the series numbers, visible on the front and sides, of the buses with air conditioning. And the odds on your catching one in Chicago's summer heat were until recently a slim shade over 50-50.

But six air-conditioned M.A.N. Articulated buses in the fleet died of old age over the last year, and the odds have melted on hot city streets to just under even.

Coming out of the July 4 holiday heat wave, the CTA is operating 937 buses - down from 943 - with air-conditioning, and 939 without.
