Article: The Corcoran's Wild West Shows; Paintings, Photographs Portray Region's Myth and Magic

It's been more than 150 years since Americans heeded the call to go west and claim the land and riches of the continent for their country and themselves. With the annexation of California, New Mexico and all of Texas, they were egged on not only by the discovery of gold in California in 1848, but by dramatic paintings and photographs of the natural wonders and endless West.

Some of the paintings and photographs that first informed and lured them are on display in two new shows at the Corcoran Gallery: "Painters and the American West: The Anschutz Collection," organized by the Denver Art Museum, and "Native Land: Photographs From the Robert G. Lewis Collection," organized by the Corcoran. ...
