Article: Pucinski will leave clerk's office a winner

Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Aurelia M. Pucinski has decided not to seek re-election in 2000 but intends to serve out her term, which expires a year from December, according to Republican sources.

Pucinski, 52, who cleaned up an office tainted by scandal and corruption, switched from the Democratic to the Republican party to make an unsuccessful bid for Cook County board president last year. She has a standing offer to join Gov. Ryan's administration, but she is more likely to return to the practice of law.

She would have been a formidable candidate for a fourth term as clerk. Pucinski won three terms by lopsided margins. But that was as a Democrat, and a Republican has never been elected ...
