Article: Law would boost cable, satellite TV competition

WASHINGTON As satellite TV companies tell it, it's a David and Goliath story, in which an underdog cleverly uses technology to slaughter a dauntingly stronger rival.

But now, thanks to legislation passed by Congress and awaiting President Clinton's signature, satellite TV operators say they're ready for a full-scale battle with cable TV companies to get into the homes and pocketbooks of millions of Americans.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said the legislation launches a "new era of television service competition" that will give TV viewers new options for obtaining expanded programming, and open cable TV markets to real competition. One intention of the new law is to bring down cable TV fees ...
