The luck that international banker Edmond Safra had nourished so assiduously ran out Friday. The small blue gems he carried in his pocket to ward off the evil eye were of no use. The lucky number 5 he used on his car license plates - EJS 555 - was no protection.

Safra died early Friday in a fire at his luxury duplex apartment in Monte Carlo, Monaco. His female nurse also died, but his wife and her granddaughter survived. A male nurse told police that the fire had been set by two knife-wielding intruders and that he was stabbed by them in a scuffle.
